Staff Bios

Abbey Alkon, RN, Ph.D. is the Principal Investigator for the Child Care Health Linkages Project, Healthline, and Healthy Child Care California. She earned her MSN and MPH degrees at the Columbia University School of Nursing and Public Health, and her doctorate in Epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also Co-Director of Boyce/Alkon psychobiology research laboratory at University of California, Berkeley Harold E. Jones Child Study Center; Assistant Professor, University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing, Department of Family Health Care Nursing; and Co-Investigator on CHAMACOS project, University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. A. Rahman Zamani, MD, MPH is Director of Programs. He oversees the Healthline Project, supervises the production of all CCHP publications, and serves as senior editor of CCHP's Child Care Health Connections newsletter. He came to CCHP with a master's degree in public health in the area of health care management; a DTM & H in tropical medicine; and a medical degree in general medicine. His numerous certifications and training experiences include the National Training Institute for Child Care Health Consultants, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 2000; the Institute of Child Health, University of London, Pediatric Priorities, 1985; Tuberculosis Control Program, Italian Cooperation for Development, 1990; and Management & Planning of Immunization, UNHCR/UNICFEF and JSI, 1989. He is fluent in Farsi, Pushto, English, Urdo and other asian languages. Since starting with CCHP in 1996, he has written dozens of articles for Child Care Health Connections newsletter, health & safety notes and fact sheets for families. His other publications include:

Bobbie Rose, RN, is a Public Health Nurse with nine years experience as Health Chair for a school based health program in Berkeley. Her experience also includes case management with the Visiting Nurse Association, health education in the preschool setting, as well as hospital based acute care. She is a graduate of Marquette University College of Nursing, class of 1981.

Krishna Gopalan, Fiscal Assistant, monitors operating expenses and maintains current budget information for CCHP projects. He has 20 years of experience in the field of accounting, budget and cost control, and earned his bachelor's degree at National College, Tiruchirapalli, India, in accounting, business management and economics. He also holds an ACE Certificate from Stanford University in computer programming. Outside of CCHP he works with the nonprofit organization Joint Assistance Centre, which helps to improve the quality of children's life in India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Maleya Joseph, Administrative Assistant II, assists two of the nurses who staff the Healthline, provides support for the publication staff, and maintains databases for the Healthline and the Child Care Health Connections newsletter. She earned a UCSF Incentive Award for her good work at CCHP in 2003.

Tahereh Garakani, MA, Ed, is the Infant/Toddler and Inclusion Specialist. Tahereh has over 20 years of experience in child development, advocacy and training. She worked as a director of Head Start, director of child development programs, education coordinator, Parent Involvement Coordinator, mental health coordinator, and disability services coordinator. She is also a part-time college instructor, and teaches Early Child Development courses to early care and education professionals.

Vickie Leonard, RN, FNP, PhD, is one of the Healthline nurses at CCHP. She is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in maternal and child health and a Nurse Practitioner who has worked with children in both primary care and subspecialty clinic settings. She was a nurse coordinator in the Bleeding Disorders Clinic at Children’s Hospital Oakland and in the Regional Spina Bifida Clinic at Kaiser in Oakland, CA. She has worked in a CHDP clinic; a residential program and child care program for teen mothers; taught pediatrics, ethics and health policy in the nurse practitioner program at the University of San Francisco; and is currently also a research associate working on a national study of nursing education at The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She has a BA in psychology, in addition to her nursing degree.  She earned her MSN and PhD from the University of California San Francisco
